MITCOB coordinator for the MIT Inspirational Teacher Award.
This person would interface with MIT and contact the chosen teachers
(and the students who nominated them) and present the awards at our
annual meeting (tentatively May 23).
MITCOB coordinator for SEPT (Science and Engineering Program for Teachers. This person would interface with MIT's SEPT program and help solicit nominations and contact teachers as needed.
MITCOB K12 volunteer coordinator. This person would follow up with existing and potential K12 volunteers and keep this page up to date.
MITCOB K12 parent and student resource coordinator. This person would create a web page with learning and competition opportunities for students and links for parents.
FIRST Robotics Competition Reception tour guides for Saturday March 24 at BU. Please contact Ryan Lester.
MITCOB FIRST informational meeting coordinator. This person would arrange for community meetings where parents and others could learn about starting a FIRST team.
They are looking for
who can talk about the science and technology they do now, or current
research at MIT, discuss exhibits or objects in the Museum that are of
particular interest to them, or even give gallery or exhibit tours.
Cambridge Science Festival Trivia Challenge
They are always looking for more questions and more teams to join in the competition.
Prof. Colbert's K12 Volunteer
and Student Opportunities
through its SNPS division, has a received a grant for its “Math is
4 Girls” program. The program is hosted at a school in Lynn. 30
middle school girls from Boston and Lynn learn math fundamentals in
order to complete pre-engineering curricula. Rotating female mentors
are needed from 3:30-5:30pm once a week (TBD) at the Lynn site.
Mentors are needed to teach groups of 4-6 girls and accompany them on
math and science field trips 2-3 times between now and when the
program ends on June 15th.
Mentors and matching sponsorship is still needed. Professor

National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black
Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChe), the local chapter, is
forming a chemistry team. A team of 2-4 high school students would
compete in the September 27th
competition in Washington D.C. The teams study alternate weeks on
Tuesdays and Saturday mornings. Mentors are needed in Boston and/or
Cambridge from 3:00-5:00pm Tuesday and Saturday from 10:00am-12:00pm.
Any student interested in the chemistry competition may apply. The
final team and alternates will be selected in July. Study sessions
will begin in April and continue through September. The location will
be announced. Please contact Professor Colbert at
National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will begin study sessions
for its Try_Math_A_Lon jeopardy style competition in mid July. High
school teams of 4 students from across the country meet for the
national competition after winning local and regional contests.
Massachusetts teams compete with others from Connecticut, Rhode
Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont in the local competition
held at Northeastern University in October. Mentors are needed for
the study sessions to be held on Saturday mornings from 11am-1pm,
location TBD. NSBE collegiate and alumni members are willing to
support up to 4 teams. Mentors will be needed through the February
regional competition if a Massachusetts team wins the local

Molly Swanson has started an independent school in Melrose for gifted
and talented students in the Boston area. It is currently K-7 and will
expand to K-12 in the upcoming years. Volunteers are needed for annual
tournaments for their team-based problem solving competition called
Bonny Kellermann talked about
opportunities to volunteer at Tutoring Plus, an organization that
provides tutoring and enrichment experiences for disadvantaged students
in Cambridge. Interested people can contact Bonny.
Sustainable Learning is a non-profit in Cambridge with a mission to realign the K-12math curriculum to better meet the needs of 21st
century jobs and careers. We need an army of STEM professionals and K-12 teachers to crowd-source and create 100,000 “Problems with Left Answers” over the next decade. The present K-12 math curriculum is over-burdened with skills and tasks that are outdated and woefully short of the skills for quantitative reasoning and modeling skills that ARE needed.
